Match Report – Bude Town Ladies vs Plymouth Argyle Ladies

The Argyle Development squad were back action at last after a prolonged break stretching back to the third of December .

They started the game on the front foot and Bude had to be thankful to their goal keeper for being quick off her line to smother at the feet of Hayley Ranachan, Gabi Alphous and Kelly Vinnicombe.

It became obvious early in the game that Bude’s main threat would be the long ball over the top of the Argyle defence. It proved to be a good weapon as they took the lead when the Bude forward got in between two Argyle defenders to slot the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper Neave Gosling.

Bude grew in confidence and started to put Argyle under some pressure but not really creating too many clear cut chances.

Slowly the Greens started to get their passing game together and Abi Scurr broke up an attack on the left hand side and burst forward with the ball – played a great ball to Faye Ivall. She in turn quickly played the ball through to Alphous who’s shot was parried on to the post by the Bude goalkeeper but the ball trickled over the line to make it 1-1.

The tide had now changed and the ladies were in full flow.

A great run saw Alex Hugh trick her way past three defenders and crossed to Alphous who somehow managed to put the ball over the bar from a yard out.

It wasn’t long before Argyle added their second when Hugh found Alphous with a through ball who returned the favour of the first goal and set up Ivall to slot home to make it 2-1.

With 10 minutes remaining in the first half Charlie Rollerson put in a great challenge and quickly passed the ball to Hayley Ranachan who put Alphous through to add her second and Argyles third.

Bude started the second half in confident fashion and soon looked to reduce the arrears but they found a very stubborn Argyle defence marshalled by the impressive Becky Parkyn.

The Bude goalkeeper kept Argyle at bay down the other end with a string of first class saves.

She was finally beaten when a foul on Ivall led to a free kick just outside the Bude penalty area. Ranachan stepped up to put the ball wide of the wall and goalkeeper and into the net to make it 4-1.

Mel Orme then had an effort turned onto the cross bar.

An important block by Parkyn and a through ball saw Ivall and Alphous link up and interchange passes on three occasions before Ivall rounded the goalkeeper to make the score 5-1.

Ivall was denied her hat trick just before the full time whistle when she tapped the ball in from an offside position.

Manager Rob Bonney said: ‘Myself and Si (Parnell) told the girls that we did not want the long lay off to be used as an excuse and we wanted them to start at a quick pace. It did take us a while to get going, but we were more than happy how they grew into the game. All credit to the team on the way they applied themselves as they had to deal with the loss of Clare Ostle with an ankle injury, the unavailability of Dani Salt and Charlotte Whitmore no longer being able to commit to the club. It left us a little thin on the ground today but they saw it through.’
