Zoe Cunningham (1)

Sun 26 Mar, 2017

Basingstoke Ladies

Two goals inside six minutes from substitute Becky Dandridge saw Argyle Ladies follow up last week’s win over Maidenhead United with another good all round performance against Basingstoke Town. Manager Travis Rowland had to make a major re-shuffle when goalkeeper Michaela Phillips had to pull out through illness which saw Captain Katie Middleton donning the gloves. This meant Ebony Dover returning from injury to partner Mollie Taylor at the heart of the defence. Rowland was also without strikers Tori Marks and Amber Pollock.

Playing against a strong wind and on a bumpy surface, Argyle took time to settle as Basingstoke decided from the onset to get everyone behind the ball. The lady pilgrims eventually settled into a rhythm with Ezme Wells setting up Kayley Lane and Zoe Cunningham also setting up Lane whose shot was blocked. The ball rebounded to Natasha Knapman who blazed the ball narrowly wide. Cunningham then shot tamely before the breakthrough came in the 23rd minute when Mollie Taylor spotted Natasha Knapman. Her pin point cross saw Knapman leap in front of goalkeeper Erin Davis-Donne to head Argyle into the lead for her 25th goal of the season. The lively Cunningham then set up Knapman who shot narrowly over the bar.

Argyle thought they had doubled the lead when a huge goalmouth scramble following a Becky Atkins corner resulted in Rachel Javan celebrating a goal but with the assistants view obscured by a defender lying on the ground a goal was denied. Cunningham then found Javan wide on the left wing but her flighted cross deceived everyone to bounce off the base of a post.

Argyle with the wind at their backs in the second half pushed forward searching for more goals and the next almost came when Cunningham raced clear to send in a cross which Lane headed narrowly wide. The pressure finally told in the 54th minute when after good work by Lane, Cunningham latched on to the loose ball to fire it in from 16 yards. The Basingstoke defence was coming under increasing pressure with Lane twice having good efforts saved with Knapman having another effort blocked. Manager Travis Rowland then rang the changes as Knapman was replaced by Becki Dandridge and Wells by Gabi Alphous.

Within two minutes of coming on Dandridge headed in a great Lane cross at the far post after Cunningham's searching pass picked out Lane who had taken up a position wide on the right wing. The unfortunate Javan was denied again by the woodwork when after an Atkins free kick saw Dover's header saved, Javan's follow up shot rebounded off a post. Lane continued to cause havoc on the right wing and in the 78th minute another Lane run and cross was deflected to Dandridge who made no mistake. Two minutes later Kayleigh Brown came on for the tiring Dover. Another Lane cross to Cunningham saw her rasping drive superbly tipped over the crossbar by Davis-Donne. With two minutes of added on time played Basingstoke were awarded a free kick for a foul by Brown which Middleton – who had nothing to do all afternoon only able to palm the ball out to Michelle Kimber who forced the ball over the line.

Manager Rowland was pleased overall with the performance saying: 'We knew with their (Basingstoke) set up that we had to work out how to break them down. And it worked as we could have won by a lot more.' Adding: 'We defended well and we kept playing football in the right areas and it was good to see Natasha Knapman scoring – something she has done in every league game she has played in.'
