ARGYLE Ladies’ poor home form continued, as the Pilgrims suffered their third loss on the trot on home soil. The Greens were beaten 5-2 by a Portsmouth side who were champions of the Division last season.

The game got off to the worst possible start for the home side. With the whistle for kick-off still fresh in the ears of spectators, Argyle found themselves trailing. Michaela Phillips, in-between the sticks for Argyle, parried Lucy Quinn’s shot right into the path of an advancing Ini Umotong, who opened her account for the afternoon with less than a minute played, slotting her effort home into the bottom right corner.

Umotong was starting to become a nuisance for the home side, as the striker continued to pepper the Argyle goal with chances, and the Pilgrims had to dig deep to keep the scoreline down.

Portsmouth did add their second of the game midway through the first half. A whipped cross into the box from Jessica Frampton, found the head of a towering Umotong, who slotted in hers, and Portsmouth’s second of the game.

Argyle responded brightly to the further setback, with Katie Middleton forcing the Pompey keeper into a good save and Becky Atkins hitting the crossbar from a well struck free kick.

The away side had a chance to go three up ten minutes from the end of the first half, when they were awarded a penalty, but Phillips in the Argyle goal had other plans, saving Hillier's spot-kick and keeping the scoreline at 2-0 going into the break.

Argyle came out of the blocks fighting in the second half to try and salvage something from the game and pulled a goal back within a minute of the restart when Jessie Jones, who was back in the side following her England U17’s trip to Estonia, rose unchallenged to head home Becky Atkin's corner and two minutes later should have equalised but after Becky Atkin's whipped free kick was only parried by the Pompey keeper, there was no-one on hand to apply the finishing touch as the ball dropped loose.

Portsmouth regained their two-goal cushion five minutes later, courtesy of an unmarked Molly Clark, after she picked up a loose ball in the Argyle box and fired home.

Argyle then had a player sent off for the second consecutive home game when Jessie Jones was harshly adjudged to have failed the Pompey left back but let her frustration get the better of her and was yellow carded for kicking the ball away and given an immediate second yellow for dissent.

Down a player, Argyle began to tire and Pompey added a fourth in the 80th minute when Frampton fired home an effort from 15 yards out, after had failed to clear a corner and the vistors scored their fifth in the 89th minute, with Sarah Kempson squaring a ball to Umotong who completed her hat trick with a close range finish.

Argyle did pull one back right at the death from the penalty spot, with Mollie Taylor slotting her effort into the bottom left corner, but it would only count as a consolation, as the referee blew for full-time shortly after, and Argyle’s search for their first point in the League at home continues.

Kevin Taylor said: “Portsmouth were the better side, no doubt about that, but at 2-1, we were back in the game, until the sending off.

Generally we've once again done OK in patches but got caught out in the first minute and going behind so early means it’s an uphill battle for the rest of the 90 minutes.”

We've done well against the reigning champions to get it back to 2-1 but once again one or two lapses at the back have been punished and that's the difference between the likes of ourselves and the top sides in this division.
