ARGYLE Ladies got the perfect boost ahead of some vital six pointers in the League with an emphatic win against Activate Ladies in the Devon Women’s Senior Cup played on the 3G pitch at Tavistock College.

Having won 5-1 in a friendly against the Devon FA Rep side at Coach Road the previous week, Argyle switched the game to the 3G at Tavistock to avoid the risk of another postponement and a potential fixture backlog and it paid dividends as they went goal crazy against an Activate side currently top of the Devon Women’s Premier League.

A first half hat trick from Ezme Wells added to strikes from Dani Salt and Mollie Taylor ended the game as a contest before the break and against tired legs in the 2nd half Argyle continued their scoring spree with a fourth goal from Ezme Wells before Dani Salt completed her hat trick.

Captain Katie Middleton weighed in with four goals, Phoebe Baker added two more and Amber Pollock and Kayleigh Brown both got themselves on the scoresheet to complete a 16-0 rout.

Fair play to Activate for keeping going until the final whistle and in particular their striker Wensday Wise who worked tirelessly up front all afternoon.

However, such was Argyle’s total dominance that they kept their first clean sheet since pre-season and in truth keeper Michaela Phillips was barely troubled.

On reflection, manager Kevin Taylor was delighted to have, firstly, got the game on following two or three weeks off pretty awful weather and secondly to have got the win before a massive game at home to West Ham United in the League next weekend.

‘Realistically, we have to take this result into context as it’s a game we were expected to win comfortably and so it proved’, said Taylor.

‘These games can always be a huge banana skin and there’s always the possibility of a shock result, as there was last season at the same stage of the competition at Alphington, but what is pleasing is that the girls approached the game in the right frame of mind and were in no mood for there to be an upset’.

‘There are still a lot of improvements to be made all over the pitch, but hopefully it’ll give the young players especially, the confidence to take into the important League games in the run up to Christmas as we look to pull ourselves out of the relegation places.
